Blogdom’s Best: Tampa Bay Devil Rays
than any other sport, baseball lends itself to individual blog
obsession. Whether it’s the glut of statistics, the constant
opportunities for second-guessing or just the fact that you have
something to write about every day, every Major League Baseball team
has several blogs obsessed with chronicling the ins-and-outs of
everything. Deadspin salutes these modem-addled souls and presents
Blogdom’s Best, given to the most outstanding blog for each team. If
you would like to nominate a blog (yours even) for selection, just let
us know at firstname.lastname@example.org. Today: The Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
There might be no more thankless endeavor than writing a daily blog
on the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The D-Rays have been the worst team in
baseball pretty much every year since entering the league in 1993.
They’re so bad that their manager even hates them. Only the self-hating
could possibly follow this team every single day.
Some have tried. The blog Ya Gotta Believe struck an optimistic note … until giving up in March and ceasing all posts. Unholy Rays
gives it the old college try, but can’t bring himself to update more
than once every couple of weeks, and only with good news, which is, of
course, rare. (They gave up in June too.)
So our award goes to the intrepid souls at DraysBay,
which updates every day and still is able to keep a semblance of
sanity. The trick is to focus on the future, with a healthy dose of
minor league updates. You can’t ignore the grim present, but site
editors David Bloom and Jim Wisinski bring the pain every day, without
killing themselves or each other. As the front page says, “Until the
162nd game of the season is played, there will always be hope for the
next day.” We have to respect that; that’s not nearly enough to make up
for being a Devil Rays fan, but it’s something, anyway.
